H.E. Dr. Namira Negm, Director of the AU African Migration Observatory (AMO), welcomed H.E.Mrs Patricia Llombart Cussac, Ambassador of the EU Delegation to Morocco, at AMO’s headquarters in Rabat. The meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation between AMO and EU in enhancing migration statistics in Africa.

Ambassador Negm highlighted the range of AMO key initiatives intending to advance migration knowledge and enhance migration data in the African continent, including efforts aiming to establish regional data hubs for migration statistics. She highlighted the first pilot project launched as a joint project between AMO and IOM to establish a migration statistics data hub for the Arab Maghreb Union, aiming to develop a centralized platform for migration data across the Arab Maghreb region and establish a scalable model to be replicated with other AU Regional Economic Communities. She also underscored the various national training workshops held in pilot countries for enhancing migration statistics in cooperation with IOM and UNHCR, as well as the thematic workshops including an international workshop on Children Migration and Protection and a Continental workshop on the Role of National Observatories in African Migration Governance held in Tangier in November 2024 in partnership with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and IOM Morocco.

The Director of AMO stressed the commitment of AMO to contribute to efforts to restructure the narrative on African migration, acknowledging that the majority of African migration is within the continent and highlighting the importance of acknowledging and harnessing the positive potential of migration and mobility in contributing to cultural enrichment, innovation, and development. She underscored the important role of strategic partnerships in advancing strategies that benefit countries of origin and destination and protect and advance the well-being of migrants, stressing the role of migration data in supporting evidence-based policies.

During United Nations General Assembly 79, AMO launched its series on “Changing the Narrative on African Migration”, as part of a broader effort to bring African voices and data-driven insights into global conversations. These efforts further included addressing the nexus of conflict, displacement and climate mobility, including through AMO’s participation in various climate mobility events and organizing panels on the margins of various COPs, including COP 29.

The meeting discussed enhancing collaboration and examined possible avenues for mutual cooperation between AMO and the EU. The EU Ambassador welcomed exploring potential cooperation opportunities through joint initiatives focused on enhancing African migration data.
