The African Migration Observatory (AMO) participated in the UNODC Side Event on Better Data on Trafficking in Persons held in at UNODC Headquarters in Vienna on 23 May 2025.
H.E Amb. Namira Negm (Dr), Director of the African Migration Observatory (AMO) emphasized the Role of AU in enhancing migration information. She underscored the significant efforts made by African Union through the AU Revised African Migration policy framework 2018 and Action Plan which in alignment with the goals of the Global Compact on Migration
H.E Amb. Namira Negm (Dr) also highlighted the establishment of the African Migration Observatory, inaugurated in 2020, with the African Center for the Study and Research on migration in Bamako, Mali and the Continental Operational center focused on cooperation addressing irregular migration including fighting crimes of trafficking of migrants and Smuggling of Persons.
Amb. Namira Negm (Dr) shed light on the mandate of AMO and the ongoing activities undertaken by it through tailored national and regional capacity building workshops on Enhancing Migration data in cooperation with IOM and UNHCR and support requests from Member States for the establishment of National Migration Observatories and on providing national migration reports. She highlighted the importance of expanding the role of data, information and knowledge in understanding the extent of the problems of smuggling of migrants and trafficking in persons.
Amb. Negm also highlighted the work of AMO relating to thematic data and knowledge issues, including but not limited to understanding the nexus between migration and security, development, climate mobility, women migrants need as well as health of migrants.
She underscored the need for comparable reliable and harmonized data across regions to understand and assist in Prevention of illicit trafficking in persons and the protection of migrants. She commented that Initiatives similar to The International Classification for Administrative Data on Trafficking in Persons (IC-TIP) support a common approach towards data collection on trafficking, aiding in data comparison and analysis. In Addition, she also referred to the just adopted Joint communique of the 3rd EU-AU Ministerial Meeting, 21 May 2025 which underscored โthe importance of enhancing cooperation in matters of migration in coordination with AU Migration Organs/mechanisms including the African Migration Observatory in Morocco, the African Center for the Study and research on Migration in Mali and the Continental Operational Center in Sudanโ.
H.E concluded on the need to enhance cooperation with UNODC and other specialized agencies to understand the socioeconomic context, to counter illicit activities surrounding migration by putting Human approach first.
