H.E. Amb. Namira Negm (Dr), Director of the African Migration Observatory (AMO), opened the workshop and delivered a keynote emphasizing that this training is part of a broader effort supported by AMO to improve migration data management across Africa. H.E highlighted AMOโ€™s role in establishing governance frameworks for migration and redefining migration to align with the African Unionโ€™s vision. This includes launching Migration Data Hubs across regions through collaboration with Regional Economic Communities (RECs), thereby supporting the production of reliable data critical for policymaking.

The workshopโ€™s main objective is to improve methodologies and frameworks for collecting, analyzing, and utilizing migration data. It underscores the importance of National Statistical Agencies (NSAs) in data management, equipping statisticians with practical skills in modern data analysis tools and software. Additionally, the workshop explores collaboration opportunities with the Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) in the IGAD region to establish and maintain a migration data hub in IGAD, facilitating the exchange of best practices, coordination mechanisms, and joint initiatives to strengthen data management. Furthermore, legal and ethical considerations surrounding data governance, including data sharing agreements, privacy, and data protection will be addressed. The program also aims to enhance technical capacities in statistical techniques relevant to migration data and to empower NSAs to design and develop research proposals related to migration.

Moreover, the African Migration Observatory presented a seminar highlighting its role in improving migration data management across Africa. Its mission is to support member states in generating accurate, and timely migration data, thereby strengthening overall migration governance. AMO also aims to foster coordination among national, regional, and continental efforts to produce high-quality data. Additionally, Mr. Assouan Bihi, from the IGAD Secretariat, underscored the progress achieved in migration and displacement data activities across member states and reaffirmed IGADโ€™s commitment to advancing these efforts.

This workshop marks a vital step toward enhancing member state capacity, fostering data-driven policies, and developing a comprehensive data ecosystem capable of addressing migration and displacement challenges in Africa reflecting AMOโ€™s mandate.
