On the margin of the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union(AU) Summit, Amb. Namira Negm, Director of the African Migration Observatory (AMO), on February 16, briefed the press on AMOโs progress, achievements, and ongoing initiatives in migration data management and governance across the African continent. Under the theme โContributing to Africaโs Migration Future Through Data and Knowledgeโ.ย
The press briefing emphasized on AMOโs strategic role in addressing migration data gaps, strengthening evidence-based policies, changing the narrative on African migration, and advancing the knowledge base of the African Continent on migration and mobility & capacity-building efforts in alignment with the Migration Policy Framework for Africa (MPFA) and the Global Compact for Migration (GCM).
Amb. Negm further highlighted AMOโs multifaceted approach to migration governance, focusing on data collection, harmonization, dissemination, and policy guidance. She emphasized AMOโs progress in supporting migration and mobility through capacity-building workshops, policy dialogues, and strategic collaborations with regional and international stakeholders. As the primary institution responsible for providing a comprehensive and accurate picture of migration trends in Africa, AMO plays a crucial role in equipping African Union (AU) Member States and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) with the necessary tools to develop informed migration policies. Recent initiatives include technical workshops on migration data methodologies, the establishment of regional data hubs, and active participation in high-level international forums such as the Conference of the Parties (COP) summits and UN General Assembly (UNGA) sessions.
According to the Director of AMO, looking ahead, AMO remains dedicated to fostering data-driven migration policies, supporting national migration observatories, and ensuring accessible and reliable migration data for policymakers, researchers, and the public. Amb. Negmโs press briefing provided a comprehensive overview of AMOโs work, demonstrating its proactive engagement in regional and international partnerships, capacity-building programs, and research initiatives.
