AMO hosted an impactful workshop in partnership with theSwiss Agency for Development and CooperationandIOM - UN MigrationMorocco, focusing on advancing migration data governance to support evidence-based policymaking and continental integration.
The workshop featured remarks from key leaders in migration governance, including HEAmb. Namira Negm (Dr), Director of AMO; Mr. Fabrizio Porreti from theSwiss Agency for Development and Cooperation; Dr. Carmen Barros of the High Authority for Immigration of Cabo Verde; and HE Mrs. Soha Gendi, former Minister of Immigration in Egypt. They emphasized the essential role of national migration observatories in addressing migration challenges and opportunities.
Amb. Namira Negm (Dr)delivered a keynote address emphasizing the crucial role of National Migration Observatories in improving data collection, fostering regional cooperation, and developing informed migration policies.
The 1st panel, βOperational National Practices,β featured Dr. Carmen Barros from Cabo Verde, Mrs.Karima BELHAJfrom Morocco, and Mr.Moubarack LOfrom Senegal. They discussed practical strategies for migration data governance and the challenges of managing comprehensive data systems.
The 2nd panel, βComparative Perspectives on National Data Coordination Mechanisms,β included representatives from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Zambia, focusing on strategies for robust migration data systems.
The 3rd panel, βStrengthening Migration Data Governance for Africaβs Continental Integration,β featured representatives fromUNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, CΓ΄te dβIvoire, and Ethiopia, discussing the role of migration observatories in supporting regional frameworks like the AfCFTA.
The last panel featured a collaborative workshop where participants developed a strategic roadmap to enhance national migration observatories. Key themes included integration into national development agendas, sustainable funding, policy recommendations, and capacity-building initiatives, resulting in actionable recommendations for improved migration data governance across the continent.
The closing session recapped lessons learned and introduced AMOβs Non-Paper titled "Challenging the Narrative: National Censuses and Migration Data in Africa," presented by Mr.YASSINE B.. This document provides strategic insights for addressing migration data governance gaps.
