AMO participated in the high-level panel where Amb. Namira Negm (Dr), Director of AMO addressed many issues from African migration strategies to the importance of evidence-based migration policies through credible data and knowledge.
During the second panel "Strengthening cooperation and partnerships on statistics on international migrationββ organized by United Nations Department of Economic and Social AffairsΒ (UN/DESA). This session aims at enhancing cooperation in migration statistics at global, regional, and national levels.
Ambassador Namira Negm emphasized that the African Migration Observatory (AMO)Β collaborates with AU Member States and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) to collect and harmonize comprehensive migration data, focusing on both quantitative data and insights. AMO aims to establish a robust, African-owned data infrastructure on human mobility. She stressed that Africa is currently facing 23 armed conflicts, which contribute to internal migration, and noted that 80% of migration in Africa occurs within the continent. H.E highlighted the importance of cooperation and partnerships in reshaping African migration narratives, asserting that African states can tell their own stories by creating strong, harmonized data.
Marina MankeΒ pointed out that the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) serves as a tool for migration governance, employing 94 indicators across six dimensions to evaluate national and local migration governance structures. Sarah HugoΒ from IFAD noted that individuals send approximately USD 2 billion in remittances daily to low- and middle-income countries, with millions transferred during this session alone. Mats Bergdahl-KercoffΒ of Statistics Sweden highlighted the long-term partnership between SCB and the African Union to harmonize migration data. Younyoung Park from KOSTAT mentioned that the ILO-KOSTAT partnership has trained over 260 officials from 22 countries and announced a new online course on SDG 10.7.1 launching in 2024, which will share Korea's best practices.

The panel was moderated by John Wilmoth, Director of the UN Population Division. AMO's presence at #IFMS2025Β was significant to bring the African Union's voice to the table.
